Yes that is true but boy did the French suffer for it. The colonists fought the war against Britain the US was not formed/recognised until after the war was over. Remember also the colonists were first or second generation British themselves to a very large extent. Go US thats what I say - its all worked out in the end. US is a superpower UK is a close ally respected still throughout the world and well the French havent won a war since.
