I want to go to the Kentucky Derby next year. When is a good time to buy tickets?

What is the price range for tickets? I don't want to be in the pit and I can't afford to be with all the rich people wearing fancy hats. There must be a mid-priced section right? Where I could wear something nice but not a fancy hat. When is the best time to buy derby tickets?
